2024 Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen: Organic vs. Non-Organic

Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen 2024

2024 Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen: Organic vs. Non-Organic

Every year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases a report on the pesticide residue levels in various fruits and vegetables. The report is then divided into two helpful lists: the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean Fifteen."

The Dirty Dozen is a list of 12 fruits and vegetables that are most likely to have high levels of pesticide residue (best to buy organic), even after being washed or peeled. The Clean Fifteen lists the 15 fruits and vegetables that are least likely to have pesticide residue (save money and buy these non-organic).

The 2024 Dirty Dozen list includes:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale, Collard & Mustard Greens
  4. Grapes
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Nectarines
  8. Apples
  9. Bell & Hot Peppers
  10. Cherries
  11. Blueberries
  12. Green Beans

Strawberries, Spinach and Kale have been at the top of the list for three years in a row. If you have a garden all three are easy and fun to grow. Strawberries need little to no maintenance and once planted give fruit for at least 4 years. You certainly can't beat freshly picked home grown fruits and vegetables.

Supermarket life hack: Check out the freezer section at your chosen supermarket as they often have good value frozen organic berries and spinach. Both are great to have in the freezer for making delicious nutritious smoothies.

The 2024 Clean Fifteen list includes:

  1. Carrots
  2. Sweet Potatoes
  3. Mangos
  4. Mushrooms
  5. Watermelon
  6. Cabbage
  7. Kiwi
  8. Honeydew Melon
  9. Asparagus
  10. Sweet Peas (Frozen)
  11. Papaya
  12. Onions
  13. Pineapple
  14. Sweet Corn
  15. Avocados

Yes we are definitely CELEBRATING because mangoes and avocados are included in the Clean Fifteen 🥭🥑

It's important to note that the EWG's report is not meant to discourage people from eating fruits and vegetables. Instead, the report is meant to inform consumers and encourage them to make informed choices. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is still a key part of a healthy diet, and by choosing organic options or those on the Clean Fifteen list can help reduce exposure to pesticides.

It is still reccomended to wash all produce thoroughly, even if it's not on the Dirty Dozen list. This can help remove any pesticide residue that may be present.

Overall, the EWG's 2024 Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists can serve as a helpful guide to help reduce exposure to pesticides and save you money on your weekly food shopping.
